Sherlock Holmes: The Greatest Fictional Detective



The beautiful world of fiction is full of numerous larger than life characters.Sherlock Holmes is among the most popular fictional characters ever created.  Apart from the massive admiration for Sherlock Holmes books and their everlasting demand, more than 200 movies have also been made in Hollywood, based on this immortal character.   It has also featured in numerous radio series in the West.




Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective based in London. It was created by Scottish physician turned author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The stories of Sherlock Holmes are a perfect unison of suspense and adventure.  Like any expert detective, Sherlock Holmes uses astute logical reasoning, ability to adopt almost any disguise, knowledge of forensic science to solve challenging cases. He is accompanied by his friend and biographer Dr John Watson on all of his adventures. .  In 2002, the Royal Society of Chemistry granted an honorary fellowship of their organization upon Sherlock Holmes for his use of forensic science and analytical chemistry in detective fiction literature, making him the only fictional character to present such an honor.

The first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, was published in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. Overall Sherlock Holmes has featured in 56 short stories and four novels. Some of the other popular Sherlock Holmes novels or stories are A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Fear, The Sign of the Four, The Blanched Soldier and The Lion's Mane and The Musgrave Ritual.
